Dr. Marcia McDougall is Fluid Lead for NHS Fife, consultant in Anaesthetics and Clinical Lead for Intensive Care at the Victoria Hospital, Kirkcaldy, Fife, Scotland. She became interested in fluid prescribing after hearing Professor Dileep Lobo speak about the subject in 2008. She led the introduction of NHS Fife Guidelines for Intravenous Fluid and Electrolyte Prescription in May 2012, based on the GIFTASUP Guidelines and later the NICE Guidelines for Intravenous Fluid Therapy in Adults in Hospital. The Fife guidelines are now being adopted by several other Scottish hospitals and the principles are being taught in Edinburgh and St. Andrews University Medical Schools. Marcia is currently studying the effects on patients’ biochemistry of the change in fluid prescribing in Fife. She employed Scotland’s first Quality Improvement Nurse for Fluid Management in 2013. Marcia is a member of the Acute Kidney Injury Expert Reference Group for Health Improvement Scotland’s Patient Safety Programme. |

Dr Margarson trained in London, Oxford, Munich and Sydney and is now a Consultant in Anaesthesia and Critical Care, at St Richard's Hospital, Chichester, UK. He is Vice-chairman of the UK Society for Obesity and Bariatric Anaesthesia (SOBA), Vice-president for the European Society for the Peri-operative Care of the Obese Patient (ESPCOP), and active in the sub-committees of the Society for Anesthesia and Sleep Medicine. He was lead organizer for the Obesity and Sleep Medicine Track at the World Congress in Hong Kong 2016 He is also Chairman of the Wessex Intensive Care Society and organizes their annual Winter Meeting. His MD thesis was on microvascular permeability and rates of albumin transcapillary escape in sepsis. Current interests are mainly focussed around the airway and anaesthesia for the morbidly obese. Outside of anaesthesia he coaches rugby, runs a cricket team and has unhealthy and ruinous interests in opera and fine wine. |

Dr. TJ Gan is Professor and Chairman of the Department of Anesthesiology at Stony Brook Medicine in Stony Brook, New York. Previously, Dr. Gan was Professor of Anesthesiology, Vice Chairman for Clinical Research and Faculty Development at Duke University. Dr. Gan is a diplomate of the American Board of Anesthesiology and is a fellow of both the Royal College of Anaesthetists of England. Dr. Gan has been the recipient of the Society for Ambulatory Anesthesia Young Investigator Award and the International Anesthesia Research Society Clinical Scholar Research Award. He serves as the Ambulatory Anesthesia and Perioperative Management Section Editor of Anesthesia and Analgesia and is on the Editorial Board of Perioperative Medicine. Dr. Gan is also a founding member and President of the American Society for Enhanced Recovery (ASER), a Past President of The Society for Ambulatory Anesthesia (SAMBA) and International Society for Anesthetic Pharmacology (ISAP). Dr Fawcett is a Consultant in Anaesthesia and Pain Medicine, Royal Surrey County Hospital, Senior Fellow at Surrey University and Honorary Senior Lecturer at University College, London. He has an elected member of the Board/Council of the Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland (AAGBI). His major clinical interests are anaesthesia for hepato-pancreatico-biliary, laparoscopic colorectal and obsetrics.
He has lectured nationally and internationally (Europe, America and Asia) and has produced over 130 publications, and has won several national and international prizes. His publications include two text books (one for anaesthetic novices and another for medical students), 13 textbook chapters, three major review articles (for British Journal of Anaesthesia, Anaesthesia and British Journal of Anaesthesia Education), two major editorials (one for British Journal of Anaesthesia and one for Anaesthesia) and two articles in the Student British Medical Journal. He is an Editor for BJA Education, and a National Assessor and chapter writer for The Confidential Enquiries into Maternal Mortality, MBBRACE-UK (Mothers and Babies - Reducing Risk through Audits and Confidential Enquiries). Closely involved with Enhanced Recovery After Surgery, he has held appointments at DOH and latterly as executive committee member and website editor for the World ERAS® society. |
